Reusing Metal and Creating Art

Do you know what this is?

Or This?

We went to the Whirligig Festival today in Wilson, North Carolina to see the work of folk artist Vollis Simpson.  He uses “junkyard” metal to make these beautiful pieces.  And yes, they really do turn in the wind.  If you ever get a chance to see one of his Whirligigs, do it!

The following picture was taken by Jeremy Lange for the New York Times. (I did crop the original to make it square.)  To give full credit, you can see more pictures by Mr. Lange and read the article at:  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/06/arts/design/06vollis.html?pagewanted=all

I hope you enjoy how other people see scrap and make something original and beautiful.

Keep thinking creatively,
Janet (janettalk)
